We are so lucky to live in a time where modern technology can help us achieve goals of staying healthy and aging gracefully. One issue that many people struggle with is the constant “battle against the bulge”. We’ve all been there at one point in our life, trying to hide that roll or “love handle” with strategic clothing. A healthy lifestyle is the first and most important step to working on the stubborn fat; any technology or procedure you try will only work when it is backed up by good eating habits and exercise, etc. After you’ve committed to that lifestyle, you may want to consider a non-invasive treatment to reduce those stubborn areas of fat. There are many options out there and it is important to do your research. What the average consumer may not realize is that some advertized “fat reduction” technologies have not achieved FDA clearance for permanent fat cell destruction. Don’t waste your time or money on these misleading treatments. They are often very painful to endure and temporary. Only two technologies have FDA approval for causing permanent destruction of the fat cell (not just “temporary shrinkage” of the fat cell), Coolsculpting and SculpSure.
Fortunately, I have extensive experience with Coolsculpting, which has been around many years and does deliver good results with cryolipolisis or fat cell “freezing”. But honestly, after roughly 4 years performing Coolsculpting on patients, I felt there were some difficulties in the treatment process and irregularity in resulting fat destruction…not to mention the length of the treatments that made me hesitant to bring it on at Skin & Tonics. We know how important the addition of body contouring is in our practice so we continued to do our research and watched the new FDA clearance of SculpSure in late 2015. When Dr. Coale and I personally experienced a SculpSure treatment and saw firsthand the pros and cons of this technology, it won me over hands down against Coolsculpting. I have now seen the popularity of SculpSure rising quickly in the aesthetic industry. I wanted to share the most common questions about this laser treatment as well as a personal testimony from a patient.
What is SculpSure?
SculpSure uses a 1060 Diode Laser that targets the subcutaneous fat cells. SculpSure is shown to remove up to 24% of the fat in the treatment area. The fat cell destruction is permanent.
The laser applicators are roughly the size of a small cell phone and lay flat against the skin during the treatment. They are secured in place with a frame and belt system. The patient will feel cycles of heating and cooling for 25 minutes. After the treatment is completed, the targeted fat cells are damaged and naturally die off. They are then removed by the body’s own inflammatory cells and flushed out via the lymphatic system to be processed in the liver and eventually excreted.
Who is the ideal candidate?
How many treatments are needed?
That varies from patient to patient, but the average is 2-3 treatments per area.
Unlike other treatments, pain and bruising are not expected after a treatment. You may experience minor swelling and soreness in the week following your treatment. There are no restrictions following treatment. Many of our patients go back to work or activities and do not miss a beat of their regular routine.
I wanted to share a note we recently received from a current patient:
I can’t tell you how excited I am to start my adventure with SculpSure and reduce my stubborn stomach. This area of my body has always bothered me, affected my self-esteem and even my posture. I was amazed that I could begin to see a difference in as little as three weeks after my first treatment. I had zero pain or downtime. As far as I’m concerned, SculpSure is a miracle of modern medicine. I can’t wait for more time to pass so I can get the next treatment. I feel so lucky to live in a time when options like this are available and accessible to the average person.
Thanks again and see you soon,
